In 1980, EMT Barret Wicklund
and his employer, John Ringdahl, needed a more economic means of acquiring type II ambulances for their EMS service in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. The two men had an idea, joined forces and founded Ringdahl & Company. They began building their own ambulances and discovered there was a market for their products. In addition to the quality products being produced at Ringdahl & Co, in 1994, Ringdahl & Co. became a dealer/distributor for Horton Emergency Vehicles.
In 1996, Barret Wicklund became President of the company when he bought Jon Ringdahl's share of the company and changed the name to Premier Specialty Vehicles. The new name reflected the company's commitment to selling only premium products and emphasized sales beyond just ambulances. In 2000, Premier Specialty Vehicles became a distributor for American Emergency Vehicles (AEV) ambulances, providing a mid-range priced ambulance.
